Thoughts
Have been thinking recently a little about the future look of this site. Basically just waiting for a non-beta 1.5 release of WP and a free day to upgrade and re-style this site. Right now I am working on the development of the mStudios logo and thus it’s a good time to think about design and user guidance and flows in general.
Originally, when I designed this site I came from BLOGGER and the design I had used there. I liked that look at the time. So it was my first step in CSS to transfer that style-sheet into a WP style-sheet. That was a good learning experience all by itself.
Then the playing and learning with PHP begun and the added little niceties: collapsable sidebar, ability to subscribe to comments or to the site itself, local weather info, ability to print, polls, preview while typing etc. etc. - and this is talking only of what is visible to the user. Other things have been various plugins to keep spammers at bay, sticky posts and customized buttons for inserting my images and other such things. These are the things I dread updating, because it means A LOT of modified code.
Things I definitely want to achieve when upgrading:
- a softer look (yes, I like pictured headers, not necessarily the constantly changing ones, but rather the steady ones)
- the ability to choose from various style-sheets
- directer means to my photo section (I do believe a lot of people are missing out on those because they need to open the link section to SEE that there are galleries around and then there is still some clicking involved to get to the journal and/or creatoin section of those photos, so either I build-in a more direct link with changing photo header or change my site to be more of a photoblog, maybe I should even create an RSS feed for them)
- and the sidebar needs a ‘memory’, i.e. that it remembers with cookies a users preferences
- oh, and how about a new logo, maybe even something which works with mStudios and even though they are separate sites.
So far that are my current thoughts on this subject.
