Phone Call

One of these rare phone calls with my mom. She called to say thanks for the (Ti-Book) power book and the tiny digital camera Bear and I had given to her (including a carrier bag, European adapter and a “how to” book for beginners). My dad had played the role of getting the power book with all the additions from here to her in Switzerland - usually he travels with only a tiny carry-on because he has all he needs here and back in Zurich, so this time he had A LOT to carry.

Now we have to get her to go to a class to learn how to use such a little beauty and then she can email me some photographs from South Africa and her new place and staying in touch will become so much easier. I am quite excited about that. She didn’t even seem horrified by the price what a simple, 20 lecture introduction class will cost her - I found one for about $400 close to where she lives.

I just really, really, REALLY hope she will be able to jump over this hurdle from,“I am so dumb/old/whatever, I haven’t a clue what this thing called a computer is and it’s so alien to me, I will never be able to learn” to the point of, “woohoo, I just updated my home page, have a look at the cool photos I put up!”.

If she WILL get accross this bump in the street, I’ll be VERY impressed, learning an utterly new technology at the age of 74 is truly a challenge not many people would face on their own free will.
