Day Seven : New York : Arts and Friends
Walked our feet off. First we went to the MoMA - Museum of Modern Art - and went lucky, as during the first hour there wasn’t much traffic. Later it got busier and busier and the more people, the faster we flew through the rooms. Some very interesting stuff, but one thing which stood out for me is how depressed the current art scene is, all contemporary art was dealing with dead, destruction, ugliness, problems and so on.
Then we went to Chinatown to meet Eve, a friend of mine whom we both know only online. And once again was the real person so very different than the idea I had how she would look and be. We had some great lunch at one of the Chinese restaurants and then floundered a little through Chinatown - and I found another small dragon for my house.
Next stop was Chelsea where we wanted to visit various other art galleries, but then found out that Jeff has his office real close so we went there instead. Organized dinner - how difficult it can be to get 9 people to meet in a restaurant and time that fits all! We then exercised our good influence on Jeff and he stopped working earlier than usual and we went to his home to hang out a bit before dinner time.
Dinner was at CARMINE’S - a family style restaurant right next to Broadway. Busy and loud, but the waitress made space for all of us at the small table and so once again it was a “putting faces to online friends”: James and Jeff we knew already but then there were Lance and Sarah, David and his girlfriend. Wes didn’t make it, but we knew he might be a bit tight on time and all. Food was good, dessert was atrocious looking but good : sunken chocolate cake buried under tons of whipped cream and some ice cream.
I then insisted of taking the cab home, definitely wanted to remember the lights of NY and not the smell of the the subways. Claire was still up, working on her next art project and we blended out the evening with casual talk. Bear’s right, the stay at their place was definitely one of the highlights of our trip.
