2-fold

In the process of upgrading WordPress from !.5.1 to 2.0.2 - and at the same time debugging my broken theme - I am now at the stage of re-enabling one plugin after the other.

First thing what happened during installation is that one has to disable all plugins before upgrading and in that exact instance I once again got swamped with spam. Naturally this is thus the first issue to address.

And I found this really impressive spam prevention : Akismet. Not the slightest clue what this word means, but oh, do I LIKE it! It filters spam greatly - though it still needs your attention if you want to ensure no good comment slips into the pot. For this reason I again installed AuthImage which will reduce automated spam all by itself by at least 95%.

This seems to be such a good combo, that I will not re-enable BAD BEHAVIOR, KITTEN’S SPAM WORDS, KITTEN’S SPAMINATOR nor REFERER KARMA STATS. All these plugins served me well in the past, but IF I can do it with less, I’ll go with less.

The next few weeks will show.

  1. […] Just imagine the amount of work and lost time I would have had if I would need to wade through all this flooding of comment spam. I’ve installed Akismet not even a year ago and I’m already at this number. If I only had this many little needles for the guys sending out this junk over the internet, one prick of a needle for every junk-spam-comment you try entering on my site and every other blog world wide, now THAT would be fun watching, you dancing the little dance of the OUCH‘es :-) […]

  2. The name can actually be traced down on their website to what it means:

    What does the name mean?

Akismet is a contraction of Automattic Kismet. Our favorite definition of kismet is “Kismet (principle), the magnetic attractive force that actualizes the playing out of karma; often used in the positive sense.”
