Flock

Very impressive! This could become THE web browser for kids, teenagers or anyone who loves to blog, flickr, gather snippets, tag stuff and share favorite sites. I love the interface, the concept with the shelf and maps next to integrated blog – and for the first time in a year I enjoy Flickr, drag&drop and upload is a snap, browsing and searching for others too, all in the “shelf”. Integrates nicely with Technorati, for example, you can drag a link into an area on the shelf and it will query it – when I pulled my own Flickr URL onto it I found within moments 2 entries from this blog here when I blogged about flickr a year ago. Real nice. If I would not already use MarsEdit as my blogging software, this would be the way to go for me and I even would let go of Safari. But be aware, it is in it’s baby shoes – right now it’s at 0.5.13, but it is coming strong: FLOCK.

Right now the biggest point for me not using it is the fact that it seems to slow down at times (e.g. when switching to the FAVORITES view) – I do assume it’s due to debug-bug-trapping-code somewhere in the application and that this will change over time.

I collect VERY MANY bookmarks and I would like to have folders within collections for better organization – Safari’s bookmarks organizer window is the best I’ve seen… just my opinion. Also, often I want to email an URL to somebody, so it would be cool if the mail icon would support this feature, next to creating a blank new message etc.

Keep the interface nice and light as it is – I like that (of course, the themes which are planned are always welcome for all of those who like to change etc.). And it’s great that so many people are working around it and are creating plugins and extensions, some of them are really niefty, like weather or stumble…

For me personally, the main thing is that Mac OSX users are taken care of, and so far it looks like you guys are taking us also really well into account and that is cool.

Thanks for mentioning Flock. We have our first beta release, Cardinal, coming out in May. We’re hoping if you like it now that you’ll love it then.

What can we do to make Flock better in your opinion?

  1. [...] Well, I finally got onto the Flickr train. I actually have been since 2004 but in 2 years only uploaded 10 images of which 7 where in the past month. I just didn’t like it because I have already so many other sites with photos and I always thought it cumbersome how to upload to Flickr etc. But, talking the other day with a friend, I realized that I should use my Flickr account because that is a place people often look for photos and there are a lot of art images too and that is good exposure as exposure is what I’m lacking. And thus I now have begun to use Flickr in earnest, this after having begun to have FUN with it due to Flock and this helped tremendously in my decision to do this. [...]
