Lost without my PowerBook

This morning I had to go into town and after a brief meeting at the Genius bar in the Apple Store I had to leave my laptop there for repair - as I knew it would be.

First the chicken or the egg? This eternal question pops up to mind, considering that with my former powerbooks I never had a safety net but I would have never needed it either. Now this machine is an utter other story. How glad I am that I have the Extended Warranty on this one, I’ve had it in already several times for repair and if I would have to pay for it, a new machine would have come cheaper by now.

From replaced motherboard (I think 2x already) to fully replaced mouse pad and surface to now a fully replaced monitor, which is 1/2 of the powerbook in one fellow swoop. I was getting more and more pink and blue steady lines decorating vertical the screen, obviously some sensors dying over time.

Bringing my PowerBook for repair is like going to the doctor and extensive measurements need to take place before I’m ready to face separation : backup and backup again and make sure the backup is the last thing I do before leaving the house. I don’t leave my admin station at any place with sensitive data accessible - that is what the laptop is for me when I’m in normal work mode (versus it being my all-around, travel AND admin station when I’m gone). Thus, once the work-paper is written, I fully erase the powerbook and then they can have it and do what they want with it.

Back home the loss begins to set in. How to track my hours or write a bill? All my organization tools which I use on a daily basis are missing.

And thus the countdown begins. If only the ticks would move faster.
