First times can be really great.
Today, I received an email from my mom.
Most of us will not think much of such an incident, all used to the fact of computers and email and all of that.
But this one, this is SPECIAL.
This is the first email she wrote all by herself.
You need to see this in perspective : this is a woman who less than 2 months ago, at the age of 74 jumped into the ocean called computer world. She not only bought herself a MacBook powerbook, but also in a crash course learned the absolute basics from me while here on a vacation a little over a month ago and once returned to her home in South Africa got a DSL connection and now is setup with her own internet connection. This is a woman who is NOT technically gifted and all the same managed to follow all my directions on the phone to hook up cables and enter data in the correct place on the computer and just to get it all rolling.
And today she sent an email to say thank you.
This is not only special, this is HUGE.
Of course, now I still need to get her to understand how to take screenshots and to email them to me for the purpose of setting the wireless settings correctly for her router which will make using her powerbook so much more user friendly.
After that we need to get screenshots of some of her other router settings so we can guide her to open up a port for us - after that I can always hop in and help directly if need be by taking over the screen thanks to VNC.
All other seems to be peanuts, one step at a time… getting comfortable with email in the first month, then the browser etc. etc. etc…. all things she did already but now needs the routine and achieving understanding and comfort on her own.
I’m really happy about this development. What a great first!
